One of the things I kept in mind while we were remodeling was how to create a peaceful kitchen area. During the process of simplifying and downsizing, more peace and less stress have been goals of ours. How to Create a Peaceful Kitchen Area
The kitchen is the heart of our home. We don’t have a dining room so sit down meals happen in the kitchen. Guests enter and leave through the kitchen door, and it’s the first room people see when they visit. That said, our home is only 1500 square feet. It was built in 1865 when homes were smaller. If I’m not careful, our belongings can build up, and the rooms will feel cluttered. Here are a few steps we took to create a peaceful kitchen area.
Calm Colors
I’m a huge fan of white, cream, antique white, and off white. In other words, I like white. The walls, the counters, and the large appliances are all white. Calm colors make the room seem bigger, they are easier to clean and are less busy. An open kitchen design will help your home feel even more peaceful.
Clear Surfaces
Stacks of coupons on the table, a pile of mail you haven’t dealt with, 50 sticky notes in the refrigerator, and too many things on the counter. All of these things can make your kitchen look cluttered, and clutter is not peaceful. Find places for things and put everything where it goes rather than piling things. Your kitchen should be a living space, not a storage space.
Consider Lighting
One of the reasons that we chose white walls was because our home tends to look dark. We live in the middle of the woods, and we don’t get a lot of direct sunlight. Don’t block your room’s natural sunlight. Leave the curtains open or the shades up to allow as much light in as possible. We took the valance off the top of our cafe curtain set to let even more light in.
Appliances Should Blend In
Choose color finishes and textures that make appliances feel more like part of the home, rather than cold, utilitarian boxes. The KitchenAid black stainless finish blends with other home materials. By changing appliances and cheaply refinishing cabinets, remodelers can create a new look that fits their home.
Add Fresh Accents
Skip the 37 pairs of salt and pepper shakers or your collection of cow-themed canisters and instead accessorize with fresh flowers, white pillar candles, or a bowl of fresh fruit. These things are consumable and won’t need to be continuously dusted and washed.
Choose Quiet Appliances
